  • Derek Lowe has never pitched at Great American, nor against the Reds, and his day numbers are similar to his night numbers. And according to this ESPN resource, Great American wasn't the launching pad I thought it was. In 2004, it ranked 27th our of 29 in runs scored per game. Its HR per game average was high, but no where near Coors or Arlington.

  • Lowe has made three starts away from Dodger Stadium this year, but one was in PETCO and the other was Pac Bell. His worst start of the season came on 04.10.05 at Bank One when he gave up 3 runs in 4 innings before leaving after being his with a ball on his forearm.

  • Ramon Ortiz has pitched slightly less effective at day than he has at night over his career. This is his first year in the NL, and so far this season he's pitched at Milwaukee and at Houston.
LHBs last year hit .305 against Ortiz and this year they're at .271.
The Dodgers have a couple of hot LHBs in Choi and Drew.

  • Adam Eaton last year at Busch:
    0-1, 6.0, 4.50, 1.17, .200
    And versus STL last year:
    0-1, 12.2, 4.26, 1.42, .244
Eaton has slightly better numbers at day than at night over his career.

  • Chris Carpenter last year vs SD:
    1-0, 14.0, 0.64, 0.86, .208
    Career at Busch:
    8-3, 99.0, 3.09, 1.16, .240

  • Jon Lieber, a former Cub, career at Wrigley:
    27-18, 460.2, 3.65, 1.12, .249
    Career vs CHC:
    3-4, 54.1, 4.47, 1.31, .269
    At day:
    53-31, 781.2, 3.36, 1.17, .256

  • The Phillies and the Cubs have identical records in game two's.
Both are 0-4 following a win, and 4-2 following a loss; 4-6 overall. The Phillies beat the Cubs 3-2 yesterday.

  • Jon Garland takes his 5-0 record indoors today against Toronto. His last three starts this season have come against Detroit, Oakland, and Detroit. On 04.09.05, he debuted in Minnesota, giving up 10 hits in 6.0 innings.
    Against TOR last season:
    1-0, 13.0, 4.15, 1.54, .315
    At Skydome, career:
    2-0, 30.2, 2.93, 1.08, .230

  • The White Sox are hitting .299 against LHP in their last 10, .293 on the season.
Ted Lilly last season against CWS:
    1-0, 10.2, 6.75, 1.29, .241
    Last season, at day:
    1-6, 56.2, 5.40, 1.52, .258
    Last season, at Skydome:
    5-6, 87.1, 4.23, 1.36, .242

  • The White Sox are now 9-1 is game two's, 11-4 on the road, under in 8 of their last 10.

  • Jim Thome's back problem doesn't appear to be serious. He should be back in two weeks.

  • Ben Sheets is finally making progress, although it's said he probably won't pitch for the Brewers until next weekend.

  • Where did Jorge Cantu go? He's been benched lately for Nick Green, who's swinging a hot bat. Cantu has also been taking grounders at third, a position he played last season, and he should be in the lineup there this weekend.

  • Cory Lidle made two starts at Wrigley Field last year:
    0-1, 11.1, 7.94, 1.76, .340
    BvsP:
    Burnitz- 4/8, 2HR
    D Lee- 6/9, 1HR
    A Ramirez- 7/16- 1HR

  • Mark Prior last season at home:
    12 starts, 2-2, 65.1, 5.23, 1.50, .282
    But at day:
    15 starts, 5-1, 93.0, 3.29, 1.20, .242
His career numbers are also consistently better on the road and during the day, although the gap is minimal.
Prior is 0-1 in four career starts against Philadelphia.

  • Brad Penny career at Great American:
    2-0, 14.0, 2.57, 1.07, .235
Penny has faced only the Rockies this season (twice), once on the road and once at home. In both games, he pitched well, but not great. BvsP:
    Casey- 8/16
    Dunn- 1/14
    Freel- 3/8
    Griffey- 7/16, 2HR
    Kearns- 0/4
    Pena- 1/3

  • Roy Oswalt had a decent outing in his only appearance at Turner field last season- 7.1, 6H, 3ER, 2BB, 7K- but his career numbers aren't that good:
    0-0, 14.2, 5.52, 1.57, .328
But his BvsP suggests last year's performance is closer to current day predictions:
    Furcal- 1/5
    Giles- 2/8
    A Jones- 5/10
    C Jones- 2/10
    Jordan- 1/5 LaRoche- 1/4
    Mondesi- 1/4
Andruw Jones didn't play Thursday night because of a bad back, and his status for Friday will have a major impact on Oswalt's performance.

  • The Astros will also receive a boost if Lance Berkman does indeed return to the lineup Friday night. Berkman is 3/4 lifetime against Smoltz, although it's more than likely that he won't be ready to face that caliber of pitching just yet.

  • The Marlins are 8-2 in series openers; 4-0 in openers following a loss.

  • Dontrelle Willis has slightly better numbers at home over his career. He's only faced the Rockies once before, in 2003. Colorado is batting .293 against LHP, but just .231 against lefties on the road.

  • After thrashing Mike Hampton on Tuesday, it is now certain that the Marlins hit lefties pretty well. Right now, they're at .328 on the season against them.
    Joe Kennedy at Pro Player:
    0-2, 11.1, 4.76, 1.50, .304

  • Johan Santana faced Tampa Bay twice last season:
    0-1, 14.2, 7H 5R, 2HR, 7BB, 17K
    BvsP
    Crawford- 1/7
    Hall- 1/7
    Huff- 2/9, HR
    Lugo- 1/9
    Phelps- 2/12
    Sanchez- 3/12
I'm interested to see what Eddie Perez and Jonny Gomes, two lefty killers, can do against the best.

  • Dewon Brazleton is back home, where he's 8-6 lifetime (0-14 away).
The last time I remember him pitching at home on a Friday night, he nearly no-hit the Marlins.
    Career vs MIN:
    0-1, 12.2, 2.84, 1.18, .200
One of his two career starts against the Twins came in Minnesota, but like I speculated a couple of weeks ago, it may be possible that his road woes are due more to pitching outdoors, than they are due to pitching away from home.
It will also be interesting to see how Tampa comes out after taking 3 of 4 from the Yankees. This is a good opportunity to carry that momentum against the best pitcher in baseball, or to come out flat, still thinking about the previous series.

  • Barry Zito career at Yankee Stadium:
    1-4, 37.0, 4.38, 1.38, .253
    Career vs NYY:
    2-6, 65.0, 4.15, 1.42, .257
    Last year at Yankee Stadium:
    0-2, 12.2, 7.11, 1.74, .333
Also of note is his home ERA this year (3.32) versus away (9.39)

  • Interesting, non baseball related note about George versus the Zito's.

  • Carl Pavano has never faced Oakland.
The Yankees are batting .283 against LHPs, but they're hitting .323 against them at home. Also, Oakland is 2-8 in series openers. NY is 5-5.

  • Brandon Backe will keep his start tonight despite fighting off pneumonia and bronchitis this week.

  • Greg Maddux career at Miller Park:
    3-1, 25.0, 3.24, 1.16, .258
    BvsP of note:
    Jenkins- 9/29, 1HR
    Overbay- 5/11, 1HR
    Spivey- 10/16, 2HR

  • Don't know much about Gary Glover, but his career day numbers are good:
    9-1, 102.2, 4.12, 1.21, .226
He's only pitched 3.2 innings against the Cubs, all in relief.
    At Miller Park, he's 1-1, 4.58, 1.17, .237

  • The Cubs have lost 4 straight, and 4 of 5 on their 6 game road trip. The Brewers have won 6 in a row, 4 of which have come by one run.

  • Assuming Vicente Padilla is closer to being the pitcher he once was, he's 9-2 against he Mets all time, with a 3.02 ERA. At Shea:
    6-1, 47.1, 3.04, 1.04, .230

  • Kris Benson will be held to 75-80 pitches in his first start of the 2005 season.
He has a good career record against PHI:
    3-0, 43.0, 2.30, 1.14, .241
    And at Shea:
    4-3, 67.1, 3.34, 1.19, .240

  • Bronson Arroyo is 3-0 on the road this year and has better numbers away for his career than he does at Fenway:
    HOME: 3-5, 75.2, 5.35, 1.51, .291
    AWAY: 7-4, 103.0, 3.06, 1.01, .214

  • C.C. Sabathia has come back strong so far. 2 ER in 19.2 innings.

  • The Twins are hitting .265 against LHP and are trying to avoid being swept at home.
Brad Radke last year versus CLE:
    4 starts, 2-0, 28.0, 1.29, 1.07, .231

  • Zach Greinke career home vs away:
    HOME: 6-7, 102.1, 3.25, 1.07, .234
    AWAY: 2-6, 67.1, 4.95, 1.38, .291
    In one start at Comiskey:
    0-1, 5.2, 10H, 7ER, 1BB, 3K

  • These two pitchers meet 04.23.05 in KC. Jose Contreras left the game in the fourth with a leg injury. Before he left, he'd given up only one hit, a DeJesus homer, in 3.1 innings while stirking out 6.
    Career at Comsikey:
    9 starts, 2-1, 57.1, 2.98, 1.24, .214
    Against KC:
    4 starts, 2-0, 23.0, 2.74, 0.91, .185

  • More reason to go against Backe tonight. Houston is 1-10 on the road. And Backe, since joining the Astros is much better at home than he is away:
    AWAY: 18G, 7 Starts, 1-3, 40.1, 7.36, 1.93
He's faced Atlanta once this year, winning 5-3 at home against tonight's starter, John Thompson.

  • Mark Hendrickson against NYY last year:
    0-3, 14.2, 8.59, 1.91, .333
But New York is hitting just .235 against LHP on the road; .283 overall this year.

  • 8 of last 10 Tampa games have been over. The Yankees are 1-7 in game three's but have taken 8 of last 11 against TB, depsite losing the past two.

Baseball Daily
  • The Blue Jays have a good opportunity to sweep their three game series from Baltimore today. Not only is Roy Halladay pitching for them, but they're facing LHP Eric Bedard. Toronto, led by Shea Hillenbrand and Alex Rios, is hitting .305 against lefties.
    Halladay career at Camden:

  • Houston is a different team at home so far this year; where they're 10-4 versus a 1-10 road record. They face Mark Redman today. Against lefties on the year, the Astros are only hitting .205, but at home against LHP, they're hitting .296.

  • Colorado is 0-5 in game three's, San Diego is 1-5.

Baseball Daily
  • I wrote about Nook Logan on 04.20.05 and he's been hitting leadoff laltely. But apparently, that's a temporary situation. Trammel says that Inge will go back to leadoff once Guillen returns.

  • Aaron Harang and Jason Marquis met 04.12.05. STL won 5-1 at home.

  • Last year, Marquis made three starts against CIN, all at Great American:
    1-0, 19.0, 3.32, 1.42, .239

  • Last year, Harang's numbers at home were slightly better than away:
    HOME: 4-4, 80.0, 4.72, 1.45, .267
    AWAY: 6-5, 81.0, 5.00, 1.41, .292

  • The Cards are 4-4 after winning game one of a series, the Reds 3-3 after losing game one.

  • Brett Myers has been dominant so far, but 4 of his 5 starts have come against the Nats and the Braves. He did pitch well in Florida, but he's got a hot Mets team ahead of him tonight. Last year at Shea:
    0-1, 15.0, 7.20, 1.87, .308
    BvsP:
    Beltran- 4/6, 1HR
    Floyd- 4/17, 2HR

    Overall at Shea:
    3-6, 85.2, 2.84, 1.19, .234

  • Al Leiter vs Mike Hampton 04.06.05 in Florida. Braves won 2-1 in 13 innings.

  • Braves vs LHP: .322 (Giles is 8/13 and he didn't play in the 04.06 game). Marlins vs LHP: .329.

  • Mike Hampton since the beginning of July, 2004: 19 starts, 14-1, 124.0, 2.61, 1.20
    Last season at Miami:
    1-1, 12.2, 7.11, 1.82, .340
    Career at Miami:
    4-3, 54.2, 5.27, 1.65, .311
Hampton made a late April start in Miami last year on 04.24.04. He gave up 6 ER in 6.2.
Hampton faced Florida only once after his July breakthrough, 09.25.04 at home.
    7 innings, 3 hits, 0 earned runs.

  • Carlos Zambrano career at Miller Park:
    2-2, 27.2, 2.28, 1.05, .200
He gave up 1 hit in 7.1 innings at Wrigley on 04.09.05 against MIL.

  • Chris Capuano career at Miller Park:
    2-5, 56.1, 4.79, 1.46, .271

    D. Lee- 5/10, 2HR
    Patterson- 1/4
    Perez- 1/2
    Ramirez- 4/14, 1HR
Looks like Derrick Lee should continue his hot streak.

  • SF is hitting .321 against LHPs, a stat I learned the hard way when they torched Oliver Perez on Sunday. Arizona is hitting .212 against lefties.

  • Rueter last year against ARZ:
    1-0, 11.1, 3.97, 1.76, .362
    Career at Bank One:
    6-4. 69.0, 4.30, 1.42, .286

  • Halsey, a former Yankee prospect, has only made 3 appearances at Bank One, 2 of them starts:
    2-0, 17.0, 2.12, 1.06, .239
He's pitched well this year and he throws a lot of strikes. He's got a tough game ahead of him against a hot Giants team that has feasted on LH pitching this year. This is a good barometer to see how good this guy is.

  • Jamey Wright has been struggling at Coors this year:
    HOME: 0-2, 10.1, 13.94, 2.23, .422
    AWAY: 1-0, 13.1, 1.35, 1.20, 1.74

Qualcomm (old Jack Murphy Stadium) too:
    0-0, 19.1, 2.79, 1.40, .250

  • Tim Redding has struggled this year, no matter where he pitches. But Colorado is 1-11 away and the Padres are 8-4 at home. The Rockies also have a 8.03 bullpen ERA, but it's been better in their last 10, just 5.47!

  • Zach Day faced the Dodgers once last year, and it was in LA:
    0-1, 5.2, 8H, 6ER, 2HR, 1K
Choi and Drew homered off of him and LHBs are hitting .279 against him this year.
    Lifetime at Dodger Stadium:
    0-2, 13.1, 13H, 8ER, 2HR, 1BB, 4K
The funny thing about Day is that his career day numbers are much better than his night:
    DAY: 6-4, 104.0, 2.25 ERA, 1.13, .226
    NIGHT: 13-17, 204.1, 5.02, 1.54, .271

  • Jeff Weaver's been hit or miss this year. LA has been struggling at the plate lately. Their AVG in their last four games: .133, .148, .207, .185.

    5-7, 91.2, 3.93, 1.34, .310
    But against Baltimore:
    3-2, 36.1, 4.95, 1.60, .342

  • Baltimore is 15-5 against East opponents. 3-1 this year against Toronto. The first loss yesterday in extra innings (and thanks in part to Gustavo Chacin). They've won 7 of the last 9 against Toronto.

  • Maroth career vs Boston:
    0-5, 32.2, 7.16, 2.14, .372
    BvsP:
    Bellhorn- 4/7
    Millar- 5/14, 1HR
    Mueller- 5/10, 1HR

    Varitek- 9/14, 3HR

  • Boston is 15-3 in their last 18 against Detroit. They lost to the Tigers last night.

    3-3, 45.2, 5.12, 1.45, .313
Chicago is hitting .282 against LHP.

  • Big night for Gil Meche tonight. Coming off this great outing in Arlington, he's got to put together back to back quality starts to prove he's back.

  • Gustavo Chacin pitched in Baltimore 09.29.04 and he gave up 1 ER in 7 innings. He threw a lot of stikes 70 out of 105, walking none, and 4 Ks.

  • Mike Mussina last year vs Tampa Bay:
    1-2, 17.0, 6.35, 1.59, .315
    Career at the Trop:
    6-4, 83.0, 4.45, 1.29, .271

  • Scott Kazmir has never started against NYY. He's thrown 3 innings of relief, giving up 1ER. He is 0-1 career at home, but with at 3.55 ERA and .195 opponent BA. NYY is hitting .270 against LHP abd they've taken 16 of the last 20 from Tampa.

  • Seattle is still hitting poorly against LHPs. Just .209 now.
UPDATE:
  • Odd that in Jeremi Gonzalez's 36 appearances as a Devil Ray, he never faced Detroit. Regardless, in my experience with him, he's got decent stuff, but terrible control.

  • Jeremy Bonderman is 0-4 against Boston lifetime, with a 6.98 ERA. Last year, he was 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA but held the Red Sox to just a .200 BA.
ANOTHER UPDATE:
  • Shawn Green has been hot lately, and he's hit Schmidt well:
    12/26, 3HR
